“Ahh! Yes! Kevin! Yes! Uh ah! Right there! Kev… ! Kevin! Ahhh! Mhmm! Yes, baby!”
Shaiyan walked into the living room and froze in her tracks. She had just stepped in from a grueling 9 hour work day. The apartment, which she shared with her fiance, Adrian, was usually quiet. When she opened the door she wondered if through her haze of tiredness she had stepped into the wrong suite. But it couldn’t be. This was apartment number 58. Her key worked perfectly. Then, the name being called in a high, breathy tone was also throwing her off. Kevin? Her fiance’s name was Adrian. 'What in the world is this?' she wondered, as a mix of anxiety and confusion bloomed in her chest.
She pressed cold, trembling fingers to her forehead and moved slowly to the bedroom. As she got closer, she realized that the door was open by a small crack. She leaned forward to peek through it. Fury rose up in her chest like hot lava. Her fiance’s brother was pounding into a woman who looked very young. She pushed the door open and walked through.
“What the hell is going on here?!” she shrieked, hands clenched--chest heaving.
Her fiance’s brother, Kevin, paused mid-stroke and looked up at her. His eyes widened till she could clearly see the whites of his eyes.
“Oh, Shai, you’re back!” Kevin stammered. He scrambled to his feet, his erect dong bobbing as he moved.
Shaiyan lifted her gaze to the ceiling. “Fix yourself!” she said through clenched teeth. He quickly dug his hands through the bed sheets until he found his boxers and pulled them on.
By then, the young woman had settled under the sheets and covered herself up to her chin. Shaiyan stared at her with disgust then cut her eyes at her. The girl looked like she was about to cry. Shaiyan sucked her teeth.
“Where is your brother?” Shaiyan asked, turning her attention to her future brother in law.
Kevin hurriedly drew on his pants and buttoned his dress shirt. He waved at the girl who by that time was staring at Shaiyan with a look of curiosity.
The girl’s eyes snapped to him. “Get dressed,” Kevin said, his voice filled with urgency.
“Kevin Michael Harrison, where is Adrian Keith Harrison?” Shaiyan asked, her left eyebrow arching upwards. “I am not going to ask you again.”
“You’ve been coming home late for the past three weeks. We didn’t know you’d be home so early,” Kevin said, running his fingers through the tight curls of his hair.
Shaiyan crossed her arms over her chest. She moved closer to him. “So if I came home the regular 10:30/11:00 time, what would I see?”
Kevin scratched his head. He glanced at the girl. “Get up nuh!” He motioned impatiently to the young woman. The girl got up, a pout on her lips.
She bent over, shamelessly exposing her bare backside. Shaiyan turned her head away in disgust. The young woman reached for a green dress strewn carelessly on the floor, and squeezed herself into it. She shimmied into her panties and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Where is my fiance?” Shaiyan asked, fists still clenched.
“Now, Shaiyan, calm down,” Kevin said in a condescending tone.
“I’m giving you until the count of three or else I’m calling the police and telling them you and your young friend broke into my apartment!” She was getting irritated now.
“Okay," Kevin said, eyeing her warily. "He said he was going to see a client. He mentioned something about Archer Group preliminary meet up.”
“Where?”
“Shaiyan, he told me to tell you not to wait up for him. That's all I know. He and his team are scrambling to revise some clause in the contract.”
Shaiyan’s eyes narrowed as she looked at him. "I don't believe you," she said quietly. She opened her work bag and produced her phone. She unlocked the screen and punched in some numbers.
"Wh-What are you doing?" Kevin asked, his voice panicked. He reached to grab her phone, but Shaiyan was able to evade him--stepping back quickly.
"Don't you come near me! Don't you dare touch me with your nasty hands!" she shouted, her breathing unsteady.
"Shai, look, I was going to clean up the sheets and everything for you. No biggie. You're usually home by 11 o'clock, right? By the time you got home I would have washed and dried the sheets and re-spread them on the bed. You wouldn't have even noticed."
"I wouldn't have noticed?" Something cold settled in Shaiyan's chest. "Tell me something: Is this the first time you're doing something like this or have you done this before?"
The young woman stood to her feet. She covered her mouth with her right hand and feigned a yawn. She gave Shaiyan a bored look and smiled. She bent down beside the right side of the bed and took up her bag.
As she walked past she glanced over at Kevin. "You can settle your bill in an hour's time. Sort out your family drama," she said, smiling sweetly.
"You brought a prostitute to my place? Your brother's place?" Shaiyan asked, her eyes blazing. The young woman opened the front door and stepped outside.
"You dirty, nasty, disgusting man!" Shaiyan pushed him. "Unbelievable! How could you do this?! I'm telling Adrian what you've been up to! Nasty! You're a married man! How do you think Jennifer is going to feel about this?"
Kevin's countenance changed from careful remorse to disdain. He laughed: a loud, vulgar sound that took Shaiyan by surprise. She stopped her tirade and looked at him.
"You think Jenny doesn't know what I do?" he answered in a low. cold voice. "Don't be naive."
Kevin dropped to the bed. He spread his legs apart as he sat down. "You're going to tell ... to tell Adrian?" Kevin chuckled softly, shaking his head.
"Shaiyan, don't act dumb! Whose apartment is this? Hmm? Nuh you and Adri own? How would I get the key to come inside here if my brother neva give mi? I was trying out this new girl.
"My wife is used to my regular. Just wanted to do a little test. I didn't expect you to come back so early."
His eyes focused on her lips. "Why are you back so early?" He stood up and moved towards her. Shaiyan clenched the phone tightly in her fist.
"That's none of your business," she said, stepping back.
"Yuh think because the man propose and seh him love yuh things going to change?"
Shaiyan titled her head a little to the left. 'What is he talking about?' she thought. She scoffed then cleared her throat.
"I-I don't know what you're talking about. Adrian loves me," she said, lifting her chin defiantly
A look of derision crossed his face. His lips formed a lopsided smirk. "Do you know what Adri calls you? Not to your face, he wouldn't dare do that," Kevin said, his hand brushing on the lapel of her shirt.
Her heart raced as fear gripped her. He was too close. She backed away further, but he kept coming towards her.
Seeing the fear in her eyes he laughed. "He calls you the Ice Queen," he said mockingly. "With this sexy little body: tight curves, round ass and firm, high breasts. I couldn't believe it when Adri told me he hasn't once gotten to sample the goods. Said he's tried many times to get you to give him just a little taste, but you always refused. Says you're waiting until marriage."
She was backed up to the bedroom wall now. A wicked glint surfaced in Kevin's eyes as he closed the space between them. He braced his left arm up on the wall to block her movement. His right hand lightly touched her waist. "You know what I think?" He was so close she could see the gold flecks in his irises.
"I don't need to know what you think," Shaiyan said, trying not to let her voice shake. "Move from in front of me!" She shoved at him, but barely moved him. His left hand moved quickly, grabbing her hands and pulling her up to his chest. The sickening smell of sweat mingled with something acrid, and cheap floral perfume filled her nostrils. She felt like she would gag.
"Kevin, you stink!" she told him, her voice tinged with rage. "Get off me!" She brought her knee up to strike his crotch, but he twisted his lower body away from her. He pushed off from the wall and stood away from her. He looked at her like she had committed a dangerous offence.
"You bitch! Trying to destroy my future? You really are an Ice Queen. I don't know what Adrian sees in you. You're like a cold, dead fish!!" he exclaimed. He walked to the door, then looked back at her.
"If you continue to be like this how long do you think he will stay with you? A man has needs Shai." His eyes mocked her. "If he's not getting it from you, what do you think he's doing? Think about it."
Kevin opened the door and closed it quietly behind him. Panic rose in her chest. She threw the jacket she was wearing on the floor. She went to the bed and ripped off the sheets. crumpling them in her hands. It was a good thing they weren't her favorite.
She carried them downstairs to the garbage skip on the compound and dumped them in it. She heard the exaggerated roar of a diesel engine. She looked up to see Kevin in his sports car staring at her, a predatory smile on his face. She turned and walked back into the apartment building, her back straight.
Adrian better have a good explanation for why he gave his brother their key. And did he really call her the Ice Queen? Laughable. She had already eaten something. She took a shower, and settled herself on the couch.
She would stay up and wait for him for once. She would usually go to bed if he wasn't at home by the time she got there. She hoped Kevin said those things out of spite. Otherwise, she and Adri would have to have a serious talk about their wedding plans.
